The Animal Kingdom Of The Watch World – Who’s Who? (5 Brands)

Entering month number 12 of this odd reality we are all living, being stuck inside and watching an embarrassing amount of “insert your favorite streaming service here”. We at the Watchout have finally reached that point and turned to the old faithful…Planet Earth documentaries as we hope to remind ourselves what it is like to adventure outside.

After working through a few episodes, a thought kept popping up – If the animal kingdom was the watch world, who’s who? So, here we are!

Rolex & The Lion

126710BLRO, GMT-Master II, MGT Master, Pepsi, Rolex
Lion, Cat, big cat

Quite simply put Rolex is the king of the jungle in the watch world. While Lions are not the biggest, fastest or most beautiful animal they are a lethal combination of all three which makes them both feared and beloved.

Love it or hate it Rolex is the king, they are the most infamous brand in existence using a combination of design, ruggedness and marketing to secure their position at the top. These elements are what make the brand sit above its competitors.

Hublot & the Peacock

Hublot, Big Bang, Watch, Wrist Watch
Peacock, Bird

The Peacock, wildly eccentric and kind of a useless bird as it is unable to sustain flight. This animal gains its notoriety from its beautiful feathers used to attract mates along with its integration within pop culture acting as a logo to many companies, most notably The National Broadcasting Company (NBC).

Just as the peacock, Hublot uses many of the same tactics through eccentric in your face designs and finishing that serves no purpose other than to find mates? The brand uses excessive oversaturated marketing techniques, sponsoring every event under the sun and strapping their watches to any person worth photographing. Oh yeah, contrary to popular belief Hublot’s are unable to fly…even though some look like they should be able to.

Cartier & The Panther

Cartier, Santos, Watch, Wrist Watch
Panther, Big Cat, Black Cat, Black Panther

The Panther is one of the fiercest and most beautiful animals on the planet. Its piercing green eyes, long body and thick dark fur with spots underneath make this cat one that is envied by many. Don’t be fooled by its stunning exterior as the panther is a deadly predator. The panther manages to walk that fine line between elegance and beauty while maintaining its edge not to be messed with.

While Cartier is known as a jewelry house first and foremost, ask anyone in the watch world and they will tell you that this is not the brand to sleep on. The designs are both elegant and beautiful which set them apart from the rest. Just like the Panther, don’t let the exterior fool you as the watches are fierce with some pretty great movements powering them. We’d like to think Cartier would agree with this pick as the brand has a lineup of watches called the Panthère.

Casio G-Shock & The Honey Badger

Casio, G-Shock, Watch, Wrist Watch
Honey Badger

The Honey Badger don’t give a shit (in case the reference went over your head please click here). Quite simply put the honey badger is resilient, tactical, fearless and downright mean – making them virtually indestructible.

This pretty well sums up what a G-Shock gives you. These watches are functional, smart and can take an absolute beating making them just like the Honey Badger. A G-Shock is the one watch that can stand up to any environment and will just keep ticking. In other words…the G-Shock don’t give a shit!

Jaeger-LeCoultre & The Honey Bee

JLC, Watch, Wrist Watch
Bee, Honey Bee, Insect

The common Honey Bee plays a pivotal role in world we live in today acting as the backbone of agriculture globally. It is said that the common Honey Bee is responsible for pollinating 1 in every 3 bites of food in the human’s diet! Yet, this small and mighty creature never gets the notoriety that it deserves for the large impact it has on the world.

Shifting focus to JLC. To the common person they may appear as a smaller watch brand with a decent offering, this said, the impact they have on the watch world is actually quite vast. JLC is responsible for pollinating the watch industry we know by both inventing innovative technologies used by other manufacturers along with actually providing movements and complications for the likes of Patek, AP, IWC & Breguet helping them produce many of their finest products.
