Guide to the One Watch Collection – Most Versatile Watches at Every Price Point

Rolex Essentails

Today we look to tackle one of the toughest to answer questions in the world of watches…how to select the one watch that can do it all, that’s right the elusive “one watch collection”. While we all aspire to have a collection covering different brands, styles and price points it is often not a reality as let’s face it, this hobby is expensive.

We are going to outline what to look for in a one watch collection and provide some killer recommendations along the way.

The Foundation

First we need to lay the foundation and set some parameters as to what to look for in the “one watch collection” we’ve narrowed it down to the following;

  1. The watch tells the time! By this we are looking for an easy to read, legible watch that can function in any environment.
  2. It has a reliable movement from a tested manufacturer. When looking for that one watch it is imperative that it will last because if it fails there is no backup plan.
  3. The watch can be dressed up and down fitting seamlessly in any environment. From conquering the boardroom to climbing a mountain this watch should be ready for the occasion, never looking out of place.
  4. The ability to take a beating (within reason). A resilient stainless steel or similar material case is a must to ensure the longevity of the watch.
  5. A minimum water resistance of 100 meters. To ensure the watch is ready for every situation it must be able to survive some heavy rain, a swim in the pool or ocean without a care in the world.

Disclaimers

In a “one watch collection” changing the straps is an absolute must! Check out our how to change a strap guide here

Sinn 556i

What’s the brand?

Sinn comes to us from Germany with over half a century of watchmaking under their belt. Sinn is one of the most bad ass manufacturers around due to tough case treatments and distinct utilitarian designs. It’s no surprise that this manufacturer has a large devoted following. With all of this, Sinn has become an obvious choice as standard issue for multiple departments of Germany’s armed forces.

Why is it cool?

Sinn is known for their TEGIMENT Technology which is a finishing applied to the case and bracelet, significantly increasing the watches hardness. In essence, this watch is built like a tank and is by far the most rugged piece on this list.

Mid-Range Luxury

Mid-range luxury category represents the largest category with the fiercest of competition in the world of watches. Here is where we get to see the brands we all know and love shine at that $2,500-$10,000 price point. Realistically this is the last price point where that “one watch collection” exists because chances are if a person is willing to spend over $10,000 on watch they are likely going to have more than one. Our three picks in the mid-range luxury category consist of three of the most storied brands in all of watches.

Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra

What’s the brand?

Founded in 1848 Omega is one of the largest and respected watchmakers on this list. The brand is well known for its exceptional movements and design across all of its lines. Currently the brand’s most famous models are its Speedmaster known for being the first watch on the moon and still in use by NASA today and its Seamaster which has been James Bond’s watch of choice as of late.

Why is it cool?

The Aqua Terra features the Omega 8900, which is one of the best movements in existence today and can be seen through the watch’s display case back. The dial is textured to mimic the teak one would find on a yachts floor and to top it off this watch was featured on the wrist of James Bond in the 2012 release of Skyfall.

How much will it cost?

Omega does a great job in providing tons of options, prices can range from $5,400-$5,700

High End Luxury

High end luxury is by far the trickiest category, let’s face it if someone is going to spend $10,000+ on watch the likelihood of having just one watch is rather low. On another note while the high retail prices of these watches is definitely barrier of entry for most, actually having the money to spend will not be enough to secure one! A person must build up a lucrative relationship with a local authorized dealer (which involves the purchase of multiple watches over a long period of time) OR one must bite the bullet and pay close to double the price on the secondary market. All of this said IF it was possible to get any of these watches at retail they would serve incredibly well in a one watch collection!

Rolex Daytona

What’s the brand?

There are novels written about this illustrious brand, let’s just say they don’t just have the crown for nothing. Rolex has sat as king among the competition since the brand was founded in 1900. Today Rolex has one of the most valuable brands in the world and is very much a sign of success across the world.

Why is it cool?

Gaining its name by way of Rolex announcing its storied partnership with the Daytona 500. This watch is the only chronograph to be featured on this list as the screw down crown and pushers give this watch water 100 meters of resistance. The Daytona derives its coolness from the famous race car driver and actor Paul Newman, as it was routinely his watch of choice.

How much will it cost?

The brand has been making high quality watches since its founding in 1755 and holds the title as the longest running watch brand today.

Patek sits atop the throne as the king among Swiss watchmakers. Vintage Patek watches regularly fetch six digits and up at auction, due to their their high complications and sheer rarity.
